This park was designated as a National Park on November 17, 1971. It spans an area of 81.715km2, which is relatively small, but has almost everything that other national parks can offer.

Naejangsan National Park lies adjacent to Jeongeup-si, Sunchang-gun, and Jeonnam Jangseong-gun. Its main peaks are Sinseonbong(763m), Seoraebong (624m), Janggunbong(696m), Bulchul-bong(622m), Yeonjibong(671m), and Kkachibong(717m). These peaks stretch out eastward in the shape of a horses hoof. The peaks, with an average altitude of 700m, are not particularly high, but every peak of the mountain range has its own improbable beauty, and make a circle around Naejangsa(Temple). Despite its relatively small size, this mountain range is by no means inferior to any other national park in Korea.

It was once called, Yeongeunsan, but was changed to Naejangsan(internal organ) later because there are so many valleys, that it can be difficult to find anyone who gets lost in the forest. Naejangsan is considered one of the fifth most beautiful mountains in Honam provinces, alongside Jirisan, Wolchulsan, Cheongwansan in Jangheung, and Byeonsan in Buan peninsular.

With oak tree, Gorosoe tree, maples, and narrow maples, the region offers beautiful colors to visitors.

The prominence of Gulgeori trees (Natural Treasure No. 91) and Bija trees community (Natural Treasure No. 153) verify that this is a warm place to live. The Japanese use the Gulgeori tree as decorative item for New Years day and as a symbol of luck. The Bija tree lives 150~170m above sea level, and can be used for getting rid of parasites.
